Let’s Talk Online Networking!
You hear it everywhere:
You should be building your Network on a daily basis!
Your sales will come from your Network!
Although we agree wholeheartedly with these sentiments, it’s not as straight forward as that.
Here are our 3 Rules around Online Networking:
Networking does not mean simply finding new people to sell to all the time.
If this is the way you’re approaching building your network, you’re in for a nasty surprise.
Rather than increasing your sales, you may just find you’ve actually managed to alienate a whole host of potential customers.
Let’s look at an example outside of your business – let’s chat around the networks you’ve created as a parent of a child who plays sport.
Some of the parents you chat to briefly on the side of the field, but it never goes any further than that.
Some become your ‘school’ friends because your children are friendly.
Some become life-long friends.
Some become business friends. You might land up referring clients to each other or you might end up collaborating.
Some of the parents need your services and as they get to know and trust you, they ultimately become your client.
Now – let’s take this concept to business networking. Just like you wouldn’t ask someone you don’t know at all to take your child home after a sports event, you shouldn’t be pushing your product or service onto people you’ve just met.
That’s just sleazy!! And if we know anything at GBH – sleaze doesn’t sell!
So how should you approach networking in the online world.
Come to it with a knowing that you will have different types of friends in the online space just like in the offline space.
Some become content support friends. (This means they like the content that you put out into the online world. Sometimes they might even share it if they think it’s valuable)
Some become your referral network in groups where your ideal clients hang out.
Some become your business besties.
Some become your collaboration partners.
Some you become their client.
And some – a few – become your clients.
What this means is that you need to approach building your online network from a place of building a number of different types of relationships.
When you do approach it from this perspective, you’ll genuinely enjoy your time online so much more.
It’ll feel so much more authentic because it mirrors real life. And ultimately, your business will thrive because of it.
Add value, add value, add value!!
Let’s go back to the sports field analogy: A mother says to you – what do you think I should do about …….
You wouldn’t immediately jump to: Ooh, I have a something that will fix that and this is what it costs. (Well – we hope you wouldn’t)
It should be the same in the online space:
Someone says – What should I do about …… Or: I’m struggling with this …….
Your response needs to be to first add value, build the relationship and the sale will happen naturally.
A Note: This is obviously not valid for everything, but for most things it’s about first showing your value and then the sale follows.
So how do we at GBH build networks that benefit female entrepreneurs:
